Removing Ticks

Signs and Methods of Detecting Ticks

Ticks are outdoor vermin and not interior vermin like tapeworms and heart worms. They are spherical or egg-shaped with tiny legs. They stick to the bodies of the dogs and suck their blood. If you note that your dogs are scratching themselves very frequently, you must brush their hair and see if there are any ticks. If there is a major invasion, it should be very apparent as you are likely to see a few of them falling off their bodies. In this case, it is strongly suggested you take your dogs to the vet for instant treatment. You will also need to clean the bodily surroundings that your dogs frequent.

Body areas

It is likely that you may find a few ticks on your dogs if you have been cleaning them clean. They are likely to have gotten these when they are taken to different places for a walk or from other dogs that they might have met outside. Besides brushing the dogs with a comb, hands should be used to brush their as this is a more effective way to detect ticks. Pay particular attention to areas around their necks, groin, legs and base of their tails. Whenever there is a small lump, part the hair to locate the tick.

Use either a tissue or put a small plastic bag over your hands, using it as a glove, to skin the tick off the body. Then use a slipper or sandal to exterminate the tick. Most of the time, you will see the blood splatter over the dead Tick. So if you do a body search with your hands frequently, you should be able to sense any presence of ticks on your dog.

Hygiene products

As you may not be happy with brushing the ticks off the dogs, there are products like Tick collars, spray and shampoo which should be used regularly after carefully reading instructions for best effect. Do daily body searches on them and at the same time apply medication like Frontline which is very successful in keeping the ticks away. Also check their crates and beds and clean them daily to ensure that there is a clean atmosphere and the ticks have not gone there to seek shelter. Applying a spray on the environs that the dogs wander and rest in the house is additional option.

Seasonal ticks

In all nations that have four seasons, it is found that the ticks breed more rapidly in spring, which in turn leads to huge invasions in the summer. Ticks can still breed during the cold seasons like autumn and winter due to inner heating in homes. If you keep up a good hygiene and customary grooming routine for your dogs, the chances of a tick influx is very slender. On the other hand, since your dogs may pick a tick or two from other dogs or when they go out for walks in the woods, you will need to be thorough and take instantaneous actions as soon as you spot the existence of a tick.
